My name is Steve Bacon, a 48-year-old Hoosier and father of two who is hiking the Appalachian Trail. I’m hiking in memory of my father — Richard O. Bacon; just call him Rob — who died in 2012 after his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Hi, Steve–just ran across your info on the Alz website and read your blog so far. Congratulations on sticking with it and for your reason for doing the trail. My hubby has alzheimer’s, and I can feel with you in the loss of your dad and the awfulness of this disease. I am from south of Indianapolis, so am a fellow Hoosier! However–I am a Cards fan, sorry, and your Cubbies are out….sorry for that, too! Will continue to follow your blog–hope this is the correct place to send this note! Thank you for following my blog, Darla! Knowing that people are reading keeps me going. Your Cardinals had an amazing season. Much of Cubs fans’ dislike for your team, I must admit, is jealousy. Every year, your Cards are somehow always in the hunt. It amazes me. I’m so sorry to hear about your husband. Alzheimer’s is a nasty disease. Being out here and having people call me “Huckleberry” every day truly makes me feel closer to my father. It’s been three years, but I still miss him so much. You and your husband will be in my thoughts as I continue this hike.

Steve (Huckleberry finch) It was good to run into you at the top of Mt. Greylock on Saturday. We were the group of crazy guys and girls, that rode up on motorcycles, and were trying to warm up in the cabin. (Chilly day for a ride, we froze our butts off!!!) Your trek, and story of it, was very inspirational. We wish you the best of luck and will be looking at your progress as you battle the Appalachian Trail! Stay safe and warm my friend!!!

Phil, it was a pleasure meeting you, too. Sorry it has taken so long to reply; I’ve upped my miles and find it tough to get to a computer. I’m trying to get to Springer Mountain, Ga., before Old Man Winter. I thought it was wonderful that you guys and so many others spent Black Friday on the trail. It beats the malls anytime.

Thanks for reading, Texaco! Sorry it’s taken so long to respond. Still trying to adapt back into the “real world.” Not as easy as I expected. Im shocked how much I miss the trail after months of being sore, tired and cold, but it was indeed an incredible and life-changing experience.
